The attachement to Control

In his work on individuation, Jung emphasized that true psychological development requires abandoning the illusion of total control and instead developing a dialogical relationship with the unconscious. He spoke of the need to “let be” rather than always seeking to control.

Jung also linked the need for control to the fear of the Shadow—those aspects of ourselves that we refuse to acknowledge. The more rigidly we try to control our lives and behavior, the greater the risk of being overwhelmed by what we have repressed.

In his writings on neurosis, he noted how many neurotic symptoms stem precisely from this failed attempt to maintain excessive control over the psyche.
